What are Aircraft Magnetos/Dual Magnetos?

Aircraft magnetos are engine driven electrical generators that use permanent magnets and coils to produce high voltage to fire the engine spark plugs. Aircraft magnetos are compact, reliable and require no external electrical source to operate.

Aircraft piston engines are designed with two independent ignition systems, that is to say, two spark plugs per cylinder and a left and right magneto. The left magneto fires one plug per cylinder, while the right magneto fires the other. This arrangement produces a smoother and more complete combustion of the fuel mixture, while also providing ignition redundancy in the event one magneto should fail.

A dual magneto is an arrangement in which the left and right magnetos are contained in a single housing and operated by a single magnet rotor and engine drive.
